A Lawrenceville warehouse houses a veterinary clinic, boarding facilities for dogs and cats, grooming services and doggy day care. Now it also has a New Orleans- and Cuban-themed cafe where barkers are as welcome as baristas.
Three months ago, veterinarian Aileen Ruiz opened Big Easy Dog Daze & Cafe to provide a taste of Cuba with empanadas, pastelitos (pastries), Cuban coffee and “ruff-freshers (treats) for pups.”
Dr. Ruiz, a native of Miami, did her internship in New Orleans and then stayed to practice veterinary medicine in the Big Easy. When Hurricane Katrina destroyed her home, her veterinary practice and much of New Orleans in 2005, she moved to Pittsburgh.
